Vasu's friend Visu & Prema write...
Vasu was my best friend and I became a member of Dr Venkatachari's family like Vasu was treated like a member of our Chellamiyer's family.
I am very excited to learn about the Centenary Birthday of Amma.
Kamala amma was a great person . Very intelligent and hard working. Her command over English language was quite astounding. In fact when I told her once that I was preponing my train ticket she corrected me saying we got to say advance the ticket and there was no word as prepone in English !! ( Later on it was included in the dictionary due to the extensive use by gullible persons like me !! )She took care of Appa ,Padma,Vasu and Aruna very well . I have never seen her sitting idle. After finishing so much of household chores one can see her doing a drawing or some crochet work.
Another person like her is Indira mami and they were rather like close friends. I remember them going to Singapore on a holiday ,two madisar clad mamis on their own ,which was admired by Prema with astonishment since she could not go to Egmore from Triplicane on her own !!! We used to visit their house very often and have never returned without taking any food.
When we went to USA in late 2000 I bought a crochet set for amma and on return gave it to her without realising that she was in her final stage of life.
Her passing away was as painful as Vasu 's.
