A Century of Inspiration: Remembering My Patti
I have been incredibly fortunate to have known a woman of such diverse and beautiful talents—my beloved Patti. She remains an inspiration for everyone who had the privilege of knowing her story.
Patti's journey began with remarkable determination. She married young, perhaps at just 11 years old, and in a time when education for girls was rare, she learned to speak and write English after her marriage, with her husband as her patient teacher. This passion for learning never faded; it shaped her entire life.
Her hands were rarely still and were famous for their beautiful artistry. She mastered intricate beadwork, crafted durable and colorful nylon-strip bags, and created stunning Tanjore paintings, each piece a testament to her endless creativity and desire to learn "more and more!" Her talent even extended to personal touches for her family, as she skillfully fashioned beautiful, traditional bead plaits (kondai) for all of us during our weddings.
The kitchen was another arena where Patti shone brightly. She was a super cook, famous for preparing a wide variety of tasty foods, and a true specialist in making delicious pickles that we all cherished.
Patti was also a woman of great discipline and an admirably strict grandmother. She believed in timeliness and safety with all her heart. I remember a specific routine: Patti would always be watching from the hall window, ensuring I returned safely from college every day at the precise time of 4:15 PM. If I was delayed by even a few minutes, she wouldn't scold, but simply point meaningfully to the wall clock, silently asking why I was late. It was her unique way of showing she cared deeply.
She was also a quiet innovator. I believe she was the first to introduce the clever concept of wearing the traditional nine-yard madisar drape using a more manageable six-yard synthetic saree—a brilliant mix of tradition and practicality!
Even though she passed away 25 years ago, as we mark the century since her birth, her spirit, her talents, and the warmth of her memory continue to enrich our lives. She was, and always will be, a remarkable woman.
